Tonnes are estimated from volume using bulk densities of ~1550 kg/m³ (sand) and ~1500 kg/m³ (aggregate). Actual site density varies (1450–1600) with moisture and grading, so weigh your load to confirm.

For M20 (1:1.5:3), dry volume is 1 × 1.54 = 1.54 m³. Split by the 5.5 total parts: about 0.28 m³ cement (~8 bags / 403 kg), 0.42 m³ sand and 0.84 m³ aggregate, with around 200 litres of water at a 0.5 water-cement ratio.
Dry materials occupy more space than the finished wet concrete because mixing and compaction fill the voids between particles. The 1.54 factor converts wet volume to the dry volume of ingredients you actually buy.
It depends on the grade. One 50 kg bag occupies about 0.0347 m³. M20 needs roughly 8 bags per m³, M15 about 6.3, and M25 about 11. The richer the mix, the more cement.

The nominal method splits dry volume by the mix ratio — simple and standard. The design method fixes cement by typical content per m³ (about 345 kg/m³ for M20), which is more procurement-accurate and usually gives a slightly different bag count.
